Fukujuso Kokeshi
Meaning Happiness and Long Life!
First made about 150 years ago and inspired by the climate of the Toohoku district in Japan, Kokeshi dolls have developed into a modern craft and are now recognised as one of the country's traditional folk arts. Made from the Mizuki tree, the wood is left to dry for six months, then cut into small pieces before the edges are shaved and rounded off. The surface is then filed and the face and body are painted on. Finally, white wax or silicon wax is applied and the surface is polished for a stunning result.
