Furniture buying tips:

  • Furniture is undoubtedly the backbone of a room so try to buy some key pieces that are both functional and aesthetically- pleasing.

  • Don't be tempted to buy cheap; bad quality furniture won't last very long and you really don't want to be buying a new dining table in a year's time!

  • Triple check all dimensions carefully. Make sure you know how much space you have and if possible tape the outlines onto the floor.

  • Be careful not to overstuff a room as it might end up looking clogged up and smaller than it really is. Similarly, don't choose furniture that will get lost in a large space.

  • Make sure you can comfortably move around furniture by allowing at least 60cm of empty space around each piece.

  • Also, don't forget to check whether your new furniture will fit in through your doorway.

  • Carefully evaluate the cost/ benefits of hard woods versus veneers.

  • Finally, don't be afraid to mix and match different kinds of woods and styles.

Most common hardwoods:

Mahogany is a durable and expensive hardwood used mostly in fine, traditional style furniture. Known for its beautiful grain and rich reddish-brown warm colour, it lends an air of elegance and sophistication.

Oak is one of the most popular woods used in furniture making.
